Kerala Higher Education Minister R Bindu announced that girl students above 18 in Kerala will be granted 60 days of maternity leave.
The required attendance percentage for female students will be 73 percent, including menstrual leave, as opposed to 75 percent earlier.
Bindu also announced that the Kerala government is planning to grant menstrual leaves in all state universities.
The move came after the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) announced menstrual leaves for its female students.
The decision was made in response to demands from the CUSAT student union led by SFI.
CUSAT also announced an additional 2% of absence for female students during each semester, bringing the mandatory attendance percentage down from 75% to 73%.
The Vice-Chancellor of CUSAT received a formal proposal from the CUSAT Students Union and other student organizations.
An order was issued after the proposal was approved.
