The number of foreign students enrolled in Indian higher education institutes decreased by 2.6% in 2020-21, according to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE).

The number of countries sending students to India also decreased, from 168 to 163.

India's lack of employment opportunities for foreign nationals is one of the reasons for the decrease.

Western countries like the US, the UK, Australia, and Canada have better employment opportunities for foreign nationals.

The majority of foreign students come from neighboring countries, with Nepal leading with 28.25%.

The highest number of foreign students are enrolled in undergraduate courses.

Karnataka is the most popular state for foreign students with 8,137 students.
