Samagra Shikshana Karnataka (SSK) has identified 1,400 schools as model schools to improve the overall quality of education in the state of Karnataka.
The model schools will benefit from programs like the National Education Policy (2020), more teachers, early childhood care education and improved infrastructure.
The model schools will not receive separate funds, but SSK plans to improve the quality of education with existing resources.
The model school concept faced opposition from critics, political parties and parents who raised concerns about government schools closing down and transportation issues.
The Second Karnataka Administrative Reforms Commission submitted a report with recommendations to improve the education system in the state.
The idea behind identifying model schools is to provide better education opportunities to students in under-resourced schools.
The report recommended merging schools to reduce the dropout rate, and doing away with the need for transfer certificates for students from Class 1 to Class 12.
The government was advised to increase funding for existing schools instead of creating model schools.
